What is a good topic to do a History Editorial on? AND WHY?
I would go with the Cherokee Trail of Tears. Your editorial could point out that when the Cherokee took their case to the Supreme Court; Chief Supreme Court Justice John Marshall wrote the ruling which favored the Cherokee. President Andrew Jackson's response was "Marshall made a decision, now let him try to enforce it." This presidential response was a slap in the face to the Supreme Court, the Cherokee and the U.S. Constitution. The Legislative Branch (House and Senate) makes the laws, the Executive Branch (President) enforces the laws and the Judicial Branch (Supreme Court) interprets the laws. This is our system of checks and balance. Andrew Jackson knew that Marshall had no authority to enforce the decision. Jackson, as Commander in Chief, set the army upon the Cherokee and forcibly removed them from their homes. What Jackson did was against the law and an impeachable offense. Write your editorial demanding Jackson be impeached for his abuse of executive power and his flagrant disregard for the Judicial Branch, not to mention the inhumanity of the Cherokee Removal which led to the death of 1/4 of Cherokee population (aka the Trail of Tears).
